The bone marrow unit. We're back again, but this time for the real deal, aka the bone marrow transplant. (We were actually here when Kyle was in ICU in March). Day one and we already have our favorite night nurse. I guess that's a good start!
So what exactly does it mean being a patient on this floor? Basically, you're receiving intense chemo that kills your bone marrow which makes you susceptible to infection. Which is why you can't leave the floor. And any time you leave your room, to say, walk the floor, you have to wear a mask. There are 2 sets of double doors to the unit and everyone that enters must wash your hands. No children are allowed to visit and patients can only eat hospital food. And other fun things like that. However, we did discover a few things to make these next 3 weeks go a little faster:
1. A 100 year old stationary bike!
2. And drawers full of movies by the nurse station.
In our information packet it mentioned they have stationary bikes to encourage exercise. So today we asked for it and sure enough, they dusted it off and brought it in. Not sure how long he'll feel like riding it since they said he won't want to eat for a week, but for now, it's something to do! I just might volunteer to lead a spin class up here one day. kidding
Chemo this week and then Friday is TRANSPLANT DAY!
PS- I'm looking for good book recommendations. leave me suggestions. update your blogs. k, thanks

That is fancy. It looks like a bike and a fan all in one. Maybe if he gets hot later, you can fan him with it.
ReplyDeleteThree weeks -- you can do this! I'm praying that the treatment is successful.
Well, have you read Hunger Games? I just read Midwives and liked it. And if you want to get all marathony in there, you can borrow my copy of Advanced Marathoning. Did I already tell you that my schedule says that this week is 20 miles at 9:12 (or some kind of time like that). My husband might be going out of town this week, so I might have to get creative with this one.
Book recommendations: Austenland, Edenbrook, The Maze Runner, Ender's Game. The first two are fictional romance, the second two are sci fi. I've got plenty more awesome book suggestions, so let me know if you want more:)
